Myanmar's Illegal Charcoal Trade

A yearlong investigation into illegal charcoal smuggling from the province of Kachin, in northern Myanmar, to China. Our reporting estimates up to $10 million in bribes are paid to Burmese officials. 

The charcoal is used to produce silicon metal, which is found in a range of consumer goods such as laptops and cellphones, cosmetics and even sex toys.
